449 LA aka SCAT - Showcase For Artists” 449LA was established in 2003 with its grand opening celebrating Martin Luther King Day. The ower Sandra Hamiltion had a vision where a venue where artist would gather and play music live on stage. Sandy also appreciates a writers, painters and visual artist and believes in continuing the support of artist.
The jazz club that resides at 449 Malcolm X Boulevard has several names. Its
awning reads “449 L.A.” (for “Lenox Avenue,” of which Malcolm X Blvd. is a
Harlem-specific subdivision); however, it is also known as “SCAT” (a
not-quite-an-acronym for “ShowCase for Artists”)
SCAT is a performance space that serves as an accurate throwback to jazz’s Harlem roots. The decor evokes the feelings of a personal living room, just as “rent parties” that took place back in the day.The owner Sandy enjoys books that are also visible to purchase if you in for a good book or purchasing orginal art work.
